Have you ever had lunch with someone and left feeling utterly exhausted? Felt like you need a nap after having coffee with a relative?

It’s almost as if the other person has sucked all of your positive energy out of you, leaving you feeling depleted, drained, tired and confused.

While most people don’t consciously realize they’re draining your energy (others are aware, but that is another topic for another day) there are steps you can take to identify those who affect your personal energy and learn take back your power.

For starters, you need to recognize your own energy before you can become aware of the energy of others. Notice what activities give you a higher energy, what makes you feel good? Do you enjoy running, gardening, meditating, art, music? Notice how you feel, what is your personal energy, when you do these activities.

Begin to create an awareness around your thought patterns. Do you often have happy, joyful thoughts? Are you an optimistic and positive person? Be present in your daily life and notice how you view the world around you.

Notice how you feel when you wake up in the morning, when you leave your house, around your social circle, your family, and when you get back home.

When you begin to have an awareness of your personal energy, you can begin to tune into other people’s energy.

Think of someone who makes you laugh and feel lighthearted when you are with them. You enjoy spending time with that person, right? You look forward to spending time with them. Their positive energy makes the time you spend together enjoyable.

Now, think of someone who leaves you feeling depleted, negative or exhausted after spending time with them. You may even have reservations about being around this person. Most likely, it’s their negative energy that leaves you feeling this way. Their negative energy is capable of stealing your positive energy in an attempt to raise their own energy.

Learning to shield yourself from this energy steal requires more than just being aware of energy. The tips below can help you learn to shield and protect yourself.

  • Set Firm Boundaries- Limit your time with those you feel may be draining your energy. It’s ok to say “No”. If saying no is difficult at first, start with “I’ll get back to you. Stopping the knee jerk response of “yes” is a great first step.

  • Cleanse Your Space- Cleansing your personal space will create a peaceful home and remove toxicity left after a visit. Palo santo and sage are great for this. Let the smoke clear out the negative energy left behind. (Use sage with caution around pets. Although sage is nontoxic, pets have a more sensitive sense of smell than humans. Which may cause problems.)

  • Use essential oils- Essential oils are a powerful tool for energy protection. Oils such as Tea Tree, Lavender, Sage, Orange or Peppermint Oil are supportive in your personal energy. Use them in a room diffuser, a jewelry diffuser or dilute them in a carrier oil and rub them on your wrists. If you have been surrounded by negative influences and energy you may find them beneficial.

  • Call in the power of crystals- Crystals are a great way to prevent unwanted energy stealing. Tourmaline, Obsidian and Garnet are all top picks for energy protection. Protective crystals can create an energetic boundary around you to prevent a negative energy exchange and dispel low vibration energies. You can wear them in a piece of jewelry or simply put them in your pockets. Using a selenite wand can help clear any residual energy left on you. Use the wand in a sweeping motion from head to toe to clear your aura after spending time with draining people.

  • Shield yourself- Imagine a cocoon of light around you to protect yourself from the negative energy and stop any energy stealing. A simple way to do this is to see yourself zipped up in a sleeping bag of pure white light. Your subconscious mind will then automatically establish a protection shield. This will prevent external influences from changing your energy or vibration.

  • Cleansing bath- Take a bath filled with herbs such as Himalayan salt, rose petals, lavender, sage, and Florida water which attracts positive energy. Do this once a week if you are feeling uncentered.

There are situations where the tips above may not be enough to fully protect yourself from those that drain your energy. In these cases, it’s important to consider the health of the relationship. If others are trying to include you in their drama or are always having issues, it’s time to decide if these relationships are the right fit.  It is up to you who you allow to be in your life and decide if any relationship, family member or friend is worth your time, effort and energy. Don’t feel bad if your intuition is telling you not to spend too much time with a person. Your health and well-being are a top priority.
